Your Daily Photo (That's Right, My Economic Advisory Panel Is Made Up Entirely of Underwear Gnomes Edition)
A few notes to myself in preparation for a keynote speech to the first ever national convention for the Underwear Gnome Party.
(I didn't get a $100k speaking fee, unfortunately, but the gnomes promised to give me 5% of total profits from this year's underwear gathering)

Damn, If Only That User's Name Had Been "Chewbacca" Instead . . .
Enigmax at Torrent Freak has been following the Pirate Bay trial in Stockholm.
Seems the "King Kong" Defense has been a winning argument for the side of the infringement facilitators.
I still like the Chewbacca defense better.
(found via Boing Boing, who found it via Slashdot)
(and if you are just now finding out about this via this site, what the hell kind of geek are you that you don't read Slashdot or Boing Boing?)

Do Parker and Stone Read This Blog?
If Parker and Stone are fans of this blog (please may that be so), they took my post back in May regarding the Indy IV pic, and made its primary metaphor much more literal than I ever intended.
Good going fellas, that was sickeningly funny.

"and in five years we’ll probably be going to court and fighting about it"
It's funny because it's true.
(congrats to Parker and Stone, you've earned the reward, I look forward to more stellar work from y'all in the future)

The Dangers of Watching Insufficient South Park
Had Rosie watched more South Park, specifically this episode, she might have stuffed a sock in it.
Please, move with your spouse to Iran, and see how they treat you.
On the one hand, if she moved there, she might be surprised at how gay people (gruesome images at link, but bear witness, and don't forget) are treated in Iran.
On the other hand, there is no other hand, it's phenomenal that her BDS is so strong that she is willing to trust the Islamic Republic of Iran more than she does the British government.
This sort of insanity goes beyond the current resident at 1600 Pennsylvania, woe be unto the next resident, regardless of party.
There are too many people who believe in magic, and think that the government can prevent all bad things from happening. This sort of magical thinking leads to an insane cognitive dissonance when confronted with negative events. In this magical land, if the government is all powerful, all knowing, and all capable, then all bad things that happen, only happen with the complicity of the government.
The absurdity of this is beyond my imagining, but there's little else to explain the "truthers" or the reaction to the aftermath of Katrina. Sure the current administration has screwed up, all administrations screw up. Government is inherently feeble at many things, it's made up of people, and people are fallable.
Rely on yourself where you can, help others if you have the resources, and stay out of everybody elses way, whenever possible.
Government's main task should be to facilitate self reliance for the many, charity by choice and not by force of the tax code, and prosperity for those that are willing to invest in themselves and others, if a government program runs counter to those ends, then it needs to be carefully examined.
The Rosies of the world believe so strongly in governmental interference in all aspects of life, that they can't fathom the concept that government isn't the best means to all ends.
Hat tip LGF
P.S.: I'd be surprised if ABC doesn't demand YouTube yank the evidence of this insanity, I'd also be surprised if The View doesn't run into sponsor troubles soon.
And cause I can't resist, here's the entire text of a recent post regarding this issue over at r blog:

What Do You Get . . .
. . . if you take an entire season's worth of 24 style plot holes, contrivinces, absurdities, and overused tropes, combine them with the judicious use of fart jokes and "snukes"?
You get another fantastic episode of South Park.
Just watch it for yourself, Comedy Central repeats it often enough.
(oh, and Hil-Dog is featured prominently)

And This is the Part They're Outraged About?
In a South Park episode with Satan acting like a girl planning her Super Sweet 16 party, you have Biggie Smalls in hell (but no Tupac), Gandhi in hell, Princess Diana in hell, George Burns in hell, Dahmer, Gacy, and Bundy as a slightly (and I emphasize slightly) more murderous and violent Three Stooges (with Columbia title cards and theme tune even) and to top it all off, what appears to be the entire Roman Catholic hiearchy of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (including a recognizable Cardinal Mahoney) acting like a jealous group of school girls, and oh, by the way many of the priests have naked prepubescent boys on leashes.
None of the above is considered beyond the pale. All of that is fair game, but they made fun of Steve Irwin!!!
Now that's a cause for outrage!!!!!!!
First they take away Vegemite from Australian ex-pats in the United States(turns out nothing to see here folks, the original poorly sourced and mostly anecdotal story that ignited a thousand anti-American message boards, was basically totally made up) and now this.
This could shake the very foundation of our grand global Anglophonic Alliance.
Noticeably lacking from all the proceedings in this episode that piled outrage upon outrage, a single person recognizable as a Muslim.
In some ways the fact that they can continue to attack the Roman Catholic church and seem resigned to ignoring Islam speaks volumes about many, many different things.
The episode is hilarious by the way. Best. Episode. Ever. Almost.

Pissing Off One Quarter of Americans
Tonight's South Park is going to seriously piss off all the Loose Change nuts.
Watch it for yourself, to explain it would be to spoil it.
It's a good one, though.
It's a shame that there is a need for the book below to even exist.
But as is said in tonight's South Park, one out of four people are like totally retarded.

TV Night
Woohoo! South Park. Cathy Seipp has thoughts.
I'm seriously getting over Lost, too much Bambi. Jack is fluffy like a bunny, and his flashbacks are generally the most boring.
The Nine doesn't cut it either. All the big surprising twists they seem to be setting up for the rest of the series are just going to get annoying.
Nothing breeds mediocrity on TV like the occaisonal offbeat hit.
