Stephen Colbert and the Closet, Part 2

More evidence that Stephen Colbert isn't as liberal as he claims to be (and maybe even a Closet Conservative, Shhhhhhh!)

Hugh Hewitt reports on Stephen Colbert's appearance at a new media strategy meeting of Republican congressional staff.

Would a rabidly lefty fella even consider being on the same floor as these folks, let alone try and convince them to book their politicians on his show as a way to boost their appeal?

Hewitt has this bit about the meeting:

During the event, a special guest dropped by to talk about a different kind of communication. Stephen Colbert, of "The Colbert Report" and formerly of "The Daily Show," sat on the panel for a few minutes and gave tips for staffers trying to convince their bosses to go on one of Comedy Central's fake news shows.

"I'm not an assassin," he said, emphasizing that his goal is to make himself look like an idiot, not his guests

Now you could argue this either way, he's pretending to be friendly so that he has more chances to skewer Republicans who would make better targets than the Democrats with whom he ostensibly agrees. Or you could argue that he is more inclined towards Republicans than he lets on, and wants the party to reach his younger viewers who assume all Republicans are stuffed shirts when he knows from his own experience that this is not the case.

Either way he's a lot funnier than Stewart right now, and his voiceovers on the fake attack ads were the best thing about last night's Academy Awards broadcast. The speculation about a hosting invitation has already begun, here's hoping that it happens.

(Stewart was, meh, his jokes didn't work for the room that's certainly evident, and the viewership wasn't large so, the Academy will probably beg Crystal or go with someone different next go round)
