Friday Funk Lyrics, 10 March 2006

It's another Friday, so of course I'm going to drop some Funk on you. In light of this being Women's History Month and this past Wednesday being International Women's Day (which I personally refrained from celebrating by attacking any statues and attaching marital aids upon them, I am a model of restraint) I figured it's about time that one of the songs I feature with my Friday feature would feature a female lead singer and feature a female point of view. (I could have gone in the other direction and featured Funkadelic's I Call My Baby Pussycat, but I thought better of it).

So there are some funky women out there, but one of my favorite songs sung by a woman, featuring a funky beat would be Lyn Collins' Think (About It). (plus this song is in GTA:SA and the middle bridge is one of the most famous samples in the early history of sampling (This song is featured in both It Takes Two by Rob Base and 911 Is a Joke by PE, among others), and this song was written by the Godfather himself, and has him interjecting in the background).

And normally I just google the artist and song and "borrow" the lyrics from another site, well I can't find the lyrics for this song posted anywhere so I'm contributing my own transcription of the lyrics to this song.

Lyrics and Music by James Brown, Performed by Lyn Collins

Think (About It)

Hey fellas, I'm talking to you, you, and you, too
You guys know who I'm talking to
Those of you who go out and stay out all night and have a good time
Expecting us to be home when you get there
Well let me tell you something
The sisters aren't going for that no more
'Cause we realize two things
That you aren't doing anything for us
That we can't do better for ourselves
So from now on, We're gonna use what we got
To get what we want

Sooooo, Ooohhhh
You'd better think, think
Now's the time when we have respect
That's the thing I never will forget
Now baby, I got a life to live
and a whole lotta loving
That I wanna give
But before I give it up
I've gotta think, think

What the future holds for me
You go ahead and see
I don't need no heartache
I can't stand no misery
Let me think, think

It takes two to make a thing go right
It takes two to make it out of sight
Alright

Don't say it's easy, though we've got it rough
Just plain living sometimes is not enough

If it's not in your vision
Don't make no decisions
Hey Yeah, Alright

Alright

So I'm laying my cards on the table
When it comes taking care of me
I know I'm able
You may not call me true
But I won't do nothing that you won't do
I said I won't do nothing that you won't do

Think, about the good things
Come on and think about the right things
You gotta think about me too
Come on and think, I'll think about you

Come on and think about the good things
Come on and think about the right things
Come on and think about me too
(fade out)

OK that's my guesses as to the lyrics, there might be some mistakes, but I'm pretty confident in what I transcribed, either way this song ROCKS. Lyn Collins was a fantastic singer (she passed a year ago this weekend, so another reason to choose this song for this week's Funk Lyrics).

Also the lines, "If it's not in your vision, Don't make no decisions" should be a political slogan for a reformist candidate. That's why people loved Pres. Reagan while the press hated him, he had 'the vision thing' (and of course that's partly what scuttled the first President Bush, he lacked the vision thing).

Our current President has the vision thing in large doses, history will show whether that vision was the correct one, I'm still confident that his vision is a good thing. But one thing that will always be the case, the media hates 'the vision thing' with a passion, no matter whether it's a liberal/progressive vision or a social conservative/libertarian vision. Screw the media, rise up, and break out your slingshots. An Army of Davids, indeed, heh.

Didn't even finish reading your post before popping over to iTunes. $19.98 gets me all 46 tracks of "James Brown's Original Funky Divas." Lyn has 10 tracks.
