Unintentionally Funny Wire Stories

(hat tip LGF)

In this AFP wire story on the latest manifestation of the Religion of Perpetual Outrage (this time over the knighthood of Sir Salman Rushdie), there's a line rife with humor, at least in the original version. The current version linked above has been massaged to remove the potentially humorous content. I really hate how wire stories morph on you. When blogging you are forced to quote extensively rather than rely on the story to remain as it was originally posted.

From the story as originally quoted by LGF the following:

“Britain has tried to ignite the controversy of the cursed author Rushdie after more than a decade,” said Akhtar Butt, the leader of a local traders’ body.

That's comic gold right there. A shame AFP decided to take out Mr. Butt. First off, his name is Butt, comedy right there. Secondly, the phrase, "the leader of a local traders' body" is probably all wrong. What they meant to write was, "Akhtar Butt, the leading local trade boy." An understandable mistake, but one hopefully they'll correct in future editions of the article if they choose to reference Mr. Butt again.

(perusing the Urban Dictionary, the closest definition for trade that I am intending would be number 8)
