If these fratboys were smarter, they'd have claimed that they were trying to instill in their pledges an aversion to homophobia by subjecting their recruits to the pains of being taunted for their orientation.
It was an exercise in multi-culti enlightenment meant to create a kinder, gentler, class of fratboys who are in touch with their emotions, and not a perpetuation of anti-homosexual hatred.
(though if they were to claim that they'd probably have been lying, the intent and actions were most likely a direct form of gay-bashing rather than an indirect form of gay-support)
