So we need to put the genie in a bottle, before we are overrun in a grey goo.
Or, we can react reasonably to the advent of new technologies, enjoy the benefits, watch for dangers, and allow progress to flourish.
Seems like a simple choice, but given the past hysteria over Genetically Modified foods (not to mention stem cells), I can't be overly optimistic that the witch-burning gene endemic in all human populations won't find expression in purges and protests against products and scientists using new techniques.
And just cause new technologies will also lead to new charlatans, that's no reason to erect needless roadblocks to innovation.
